I finished Grievers by Adrienne Maree Brown and it’s another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read from me. 😮 I guess I’m just on the part of my #tbr that’s leading me to deeply resonant and meaningful work. This book was really beautiful. Grief is something we, in this time and place, could certainly use a guide around because our conditioning has left us vastly underresourced, even as we seem to experience it on a bigger and deeper scale. There’s a couple quotes from this book that stand out to me but the top top one is this:
‘She had become heavy of heart, and hadn't built the kind of friendships that could carry the weight.’
Ya feel it? Have you built the kind of friendships that can carry the weight of your heavy heart? If not, I encourage you to friend. Because grief is inevitable. We must learn to carry our own heavy hearts, and when it’s possible, connect with loved ones in a way that enables them to help bear that weight as well.
TikTok may be banned in the US. Which may not concern you in the least if you don’t use the app yourself. But millions of people do, and a lot of folks from marginalized communities like Black folk, deaf folk, disabled folk, neurodivergent folk, Queer and Trans folk etc etc have found community there and a number of them make their living there too. So, the impact will definitely be felt. There was a LOT of education going on there too and many feel that the ban is more motivated by how folks were organizing and mobilizing there than anything else. I don’t know that any other app can manage it but we’ll see. One thing I know is that I will still be seeking community, sharing what I know and listening to what folks are sharing. I don’t think any social media is blameless at the moment. They’re all pretty exploitative and seemingly unconcerned with feedback from users. Meanwhile, I’m still trying to figure out how to save my drafts to my phone. 😂 Apparently I have time.
This is also a great reminder that if you don’t own the app, you need to use the platform to direct folks to your own space rather than build your home there because at any time that rental could be reclaimed by the owner. Our collective IG and FB accounts were banned suddenly late last year and I still haven’t recovered from the experience. I know because I’m way more hesitant to post there now. It was SO stressful. We’re focused on our website and blog now and using our social media to entice folks to visit us there instead. I recommend you do something similar for yourself, regardless of what your long form content is… make sure it’s yours and in your space then use all the channels to direct folks to where you want them!
I often think that the 1% suffers from a severe lack of imagination, and it grieves me. With all the wealth, time, power they have… To think that they cannot imagine a world better than this? Sigh. Instant despair. What might the world look like if everyone had their needs met? Instead of this nonsense state we’re in right now where a tiny ‘random’ group of people hoard resources they subjugate the rest of us to produce for them? With the world making money they hold, they could easily make sure everyone was fed, clothed, sheltered and cared for… but they'd rather do this. What a waste of this magic called existence. I hope we’ll soon do better, because this is pitiful… and like I often say, no wonder the aliens won’t say hello to us. Must be a bummer to watch us do… this.
